The Kona Sutra – Review Of The Performance Touring Bike From Kona

The Kona Sutra has been a welcome addition to the range of touring bikes available on the market. It’s Kona’s only dedicated tourer in the range, although they are well-known for robust steel-framed road bikes.

You can tell by looking at the frame geometry that Kona have borrowed a lot from their MTB experience – the marked slope to the top tube and the compact rear triangle. The lively yet stable ride will be the major outcome from the choice of this geometry. The choice of steel tubing for frame construction only adds to the comfort. Resistant to the sort of damage that a touring bike is subject to, the resilience of steel is renowned.

The disc brakes fitted to the Sutra are a major departure from convention. Cantilevers are the usual choice for touring bikes, but there are times when disc brake power could be very handy indeed – trying to stop a fully-laden bike on a wet road can often be heart-stopping!

There’s a total of 27 gears from the triple chainrings. The gear derailleurs are Shimano, with Deore XT at the rear and the more modest Tiagra at the front. Traditional bar-end shifters are chosen. Those used to integrated gear/brake levers may find these strange, but the bar-end shifters are easy to maintain, and quickly become familiar to use.

The Kona Road handlebar gives you plenty of hand-position options. The drop is not too great, so the riding position is good.

Front and rear pannier racks are fitted as standard to the Sutra, as well as a proper set of mudguards, which are really essential for touring in the UK.

Pedals are not supplied however, so you have to add on the cost of those. You may have your own favourites of course, but at least you can choose the type that suits you best.

It’s one of the great aspects of the Kona Sutra that it’s so versatile. Yes it has the ability and capacity to carry you and your kit on extended trips, but it’s also great for getting out and about on a Sunday afternoon, as well as for fast commuting for the rest of the week.

It’s very well fitted out, with bags of style and attitude.
